Why Eye Exams are so Important

Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining eye health and overall wellness. They can help detect eye conditions and diseases early, many of which can be managed more effectively when identified at the beginning stages. Our comprehensive eye exams assess eye function and are crucial for preventive vision care.

The Ideal Schedule for Eye Exams

The frequency of eye exams can depend on various factors, including age, health history, and risk factors for eye diseases. To maintain good eye health, it is important to determine the right interval between eye exams. Here's an AOA-approved guideline:

Patients with Eyeglasses or Contacts: Annual eye exams are recommended to keep prescriptions effective
Individuals without Vision Correction Needs: To maintain optimal eye function, it is advisable to have an eye exam every year
Individuals with Risk Factors: If you have a chronic condition that affects the eyes (like diabetes), wear corrective lenses, or have a family history of eye diseases, yearly exams — or more frequently based on your eye doctor's advice — are crucial
Everyone over 60: Should have annual eye exams, as the risk of eye disease increases with age

Individuals Over 40: It’s advisable to have eye exams every one to two years to monitor for age-related eye issues such as presbyopia, cataracts, and macular degeneration
Children and Teens: We recommend getting your child’s eyes examined before they start school and requesting follow-up appointments every one to two years to support their visual development. These regular check-ups can improve their academic performance

Pediatric Eye Exams: We serve Oklahoma County's Future By Helping Them With Healthy Vision

Pediatric eye exams ensure children have the visual skills for effective learning and development. These exams assess not just clarity of vision but also critical skills such as binocular vision, focusing, peripheral vision, color vision, hand-eye coordination, and tracking. Our eye doctors thoroughly examine your child’s eyes, including the areas around and inside the eye, to check for any conditions that could affect their development. We encourage sharing any relevant personal or family history that might impact your child's vision or eye health, such as premature birth, turned or crossed eyes, family history of eye disease, and eye injury.

In accordance with the AOA, we advise that children who wear eyeglasses or contact lenses should undergo eye examinations at least once every 12 months or as advised by their optometrist.
